    Archiving Fan Fiction

    Greetings my fellow Masters,

My name is Ryan Foley and Mr. Tyree has asked me to compile all of the fan-fiction for the he-man.org archives. I have been working back from the beginning and archiving all of your works.

There are a number of talented authors in this forum who have obviously put a tremendous amount of hard work into their stories. I am working hard to maintain the integrity and spacing of your stories. However... I am only human.

If it would be possible, I would love for you to send me completed files of any finished works you have posted thus far in .txt format. While I am archiving these forums, any emails sent to me will immediately be given precedence over anything that I have currently archived.

I think it is great of he-man.org that they are taking space out of their website to keep all of these stories available. As a fellow fan-fiction writer from a different genre, I know how hard everyone works on these non-paying labors of love, so make sure your artistic vision is perserved. I am sure that the webmasters of the .org site is going to do something cool with all of these works.

Please feel free to email your .txt stories to me at rmfoley@tds.net

    Thanks again

    Ryan Foley

Ryan, you'd probably do better to PM one of the mods to ask them to get this thread made sticky. They're more likely to notice.

EDIT: I am totally good with the archiving of fan fiction, but I have a question that I hope you can answer. At the moment the fan fic archive doesn't work. Will that be working again soon? I would hate to have the first section of my trilogy archived before my second section comes out, and then have the archive not work so no one can go read it.

If that makes any sense? Is there some way this can be answered? Not trying to be a pain, just wondering.

Well my only other fic is on the same file as my current fic and I consider it the same fic (more or less). So I'll e-mail it all when I'm done posting on my current fic.

I have a question. I'm currently working on a multi-part fanfic. If I send you the first two parts, could I send you the second two parts later?

    Fiction... in Progress

For all of you authors out there who are currently working on fiction or multi-part stories, I encourage you to keep working!!!

I am not sure what the plans will be for the new fan fiction section but give the administrators time to unleash their new plans.

In the meantime, I would use this valuable down time to develop, edit, and improve your ficition to make them as good as possible before it goes into the archives.

I will list more information as I learn it!

    Just a suggestion...

can we get a "reader" for the fan fictions? something that would allow people to read them with ease, and also give them a little more bang than just a simple click and read? I know it might be a bit much, but again, just a suggestion.

I would prefer that none of my stories be archived until they are completed have been given their final edit. Is that possible? How would I arrange it. As of now, only one of my stories on the boards is complete, but a couple are nearing completion.

Also, just for clarification, when we agree to have our works archived, that doesn't mean we give up the rights to them in any way? Correct?

I'm a bit curious about this too. I'm sure there won't be a problem, but it's good to get some clarification.

    Archive Clarification

    Hello Masters,
I feel that I might need to make a few clarifications here. I am a board surfer, just like all of you. I just responded to a "want ad" for people to help out with the website, so I am afraid that I know very little beyond what I was contracted to do.

However, it looks as if MVCreations is striving to make this section of the site better. It looks to me that instead of having to search all through the various pages of the section, they will probably have an archive where you will be able to download the archived files from a section on their .org site. But again, I am just guessing...

As for your fictions, I am pretty sure that everyone will retain all of their rights to all of their stories. I have not changed a single word in any of the stories that I have downloaded. They have all been preserved as the author wrote them.
The only changes I have made revolve around chapter breaks. Far too often, authors relied on the breaks within the posting format to show their chapter breaks, so often I have added in a few dash lines like this...

    ----------

    Chapter 1

    ----------

...to show the chapter breaks. Other than that, all I did was put the title and the author (either real name or posting handle) prominently on the top of the file. It should be noted that only one author thus far, has put his actual email address on his fiction. In order to recieve feedback on your stories, this might be a good inclusion from now on and if you want me to put your email address in your story, please send me the addy along with your name (or net handle) and the story name you wanted it added to. But do it FAST, I am hoping to send my archived work to Mr. Tyree this week!

Also, I am only archiving the stories that were posted here. I have NOT archived stories that were linked to other pages. So if you have stories that were posted elsewhere, they will not be listed in the archives...

On a personal note, after reading over 950+ postings over the last week, I am glad that MVCreations provided everyone here with an outlet for their creativity. You all appear to be a tight knit group who love sharing stories... But I have seen a lot of problems too. Not problems with the stories but the format in which they are presented. I think MVCreation is making strives to improve your presentation.

So while they are purging this thread, I urge everyone to keep writing! Heck, even if this thread disappeared all together, KEEP WRITING! It is the only way you get better!

Hopefully, I will get some more information soon...

Definately email Matt Tyree and let him know that you don't want your work up yet. I am just putting everything together and sending it to him...

I e-mailed Matt and told him I didn't want my work archived.

'Flight of Icarus' will only go up on He-Man.org when it's completley done.

Same here. I'm currently editing "The Final Adventure" and trying to work on "The Crossroads of Destiny," so I don't want them on-line quite yet.

    Well, not on .org yet.

I'm currently writing my first He-Man fan-fic, and I have to say I like the idea of submitting my work to you to be archived. But I have a few important things to ask: when I e-mail my submission to you, do I send the finished chapters in the body of the message or as attachments?

Do they have to be individual attachments, or can they be attached together?

And are there any specific criteria that must be adhered to in order to make sure our work gets into the archives?

    Thanks!

Quick question - sometimes I show telepathy/flashbacks in my stories by using italics. Now, you said that these stories need to be presented as .txt files (read: text files). That's fine. But am I going to have italics when it's in text form?

    My Suggestions...

On the archiving of Fan Fiction, I believe my part in the project is over. I was just commissioned to archive the present fiction. If you are currently working on a fan fiction, I would wait to do any postings until after this transition has been done with the message board.

Remember, according to Mr. Tyree's email they are purging the forum so I don't know if it is going away entirely or just being streamline.

So be patient and let's wait to see what direction they are taking the fan fiction section.

As to questions about italics and bold face, yes that information is lost via .txt format. Again, wait to see what the moderators are going to do with the forums. Maybe they will allow the postings of .doc format. Whatever they do, I am sure they will come up with something great...

Note: he said purging threads over 30 days old. I.E., I assume, thread that have had no activity for 30 days or more.

From that I take it that currently active threads should be okay, and I plan to post more tonight.

I have two versions of my stories, One without chapters and one with chapters. The Chaptered version I did for the Boards and ff.net because a single post was too big. I'm going to sent the chaptered versions, if you don't want that version.
    Etheria will be mine!
