Just terrible. I have a little girl in elementary school. I couldn't imagine getting the news that my child died at school because some wacko went in and shot kids up. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those deceased children and to the rest who survived to be traumatized by such a tragic event.

I have been watching the news coverage for several hours now and am just in shock. It is always very sad when something like this happens, but it is especially sad knowing the victims are small, innocent children

I know this is an emotional subject, but lets not turn this into a debate. Rather, let it be a time for prayer.

While my heart does indeed go out to all the families grieving right now, I personally believe in this law firmly!

... just because some nutter lost it and couldnt handle pressure, don't peg everyone in that group as "all gun owners are evil" an because of this, no one should be allowed to own a firearm.

Some of us are infact responsible gun owners.

But again, guns shouldnt even be an issue right now. Lets focus on the needs of the survivors and the families that lost loved ones and helping them get thru this dark time in there lives.

This is a debate for the Tar Swamp, frankly. But I will say that violence existed thousands of years before guns. Humans have found ways to kill and injure long before guns came on the scene.

I live maybe 25 min from Newtown, and it's hit a little close as I have nieces in New Fairfield in Elementary School that age bracket. So I haven't really been keeping the news on or going near it, I'm just thankful they're safe, and my thoughts, and prayers are with all of those people in Newtown. It's flatout evil what went down. It's the sort of thing you hear about, and you feel horrible, but in time you get by. But I think the real tragedy is a lot of those innocent children are going to spend a lot of their lives looking over their shoulder worrying about a different person going on the lam in their school/job/etc. I remember having a hard enough time when I was a kid worrying about getting bullied, and internalizing a lot of crap. That was pretty rough. THIS is on a whole new level of messed up. So I really deeply feel for all of those children. Kids can be resilient but I don't know they'll have the sort of coping mechanism at that age (We're talking FIVE year olds in a lot of cases) to deal with this sort of thing. Hell, there are probably kids in my town, other towns who have heard about this by now, and are worried about their own schools. I feel for all of those parents too because I can't imagine what it's like to lose a child. So I'm praying for all of them. I'm also keeping the opportunistic talking heads (The media, not the band) off of my television screen for the time being. I don't need to keep hearing about it.

Yeah, I'm about 10 minutes up 302 from there. It's insane.

I'm actually home from work today and was coming up 84 when the shooting happened. There were tons of police cars that flew by me going well over 100 eastbound towards Newtown, but I just chalked it up to an accident.

Then I was hearing sirens all morning. Found out about the shooting around 11am when a friend texted me from work.

It's just sick...I know these mass shootings take a sick person, but it takes a really sick person to kill such small, innocent children. I just don't understand how someone could do that, even if they were mad at the world and wanted to lash out.

I get that he wanted to kill his parents and perhaps he even had a good reason for that cuz as far as we know they MAY have been terrible parents (not saying they were I am just saying they COULD HAVE been) but any sympathy we might have felt for the shooter went out of the window when he decided to kill children as well. That act plants him firmly in the SCUM category

Let's please keep any discussion about gun control legislation/debates, whether pro or con, to the Tar Swamp.

This is a horrible, horrible story, and my prayers are with these families and the students and faculty of the school. I can't even imagine what kind of a nightmare this is for them, or what kind of a monster would do this. Every time something like this happens, I hope it's the last time. And I begin to feel slightly sick when I think that there is need to refer to mass shootings as "the latest one".

I'm still in shock. I know there are evil people in the world, but it's still hard to comprehend anyone doing this for any reason. Mentally disturbed doesn't begin to cover what he'd have to be to do this. And it makes me sick to think we just had a mass shooting earlier this week, the Colorado shooting earlier this year, and are starting to get used to "Another shooting" in headlines. I can only pray for the survivors and all of us and hope for peace for the victims.

The one at Virginia Tech a few years back? I think there were 33 people killed in that horror.
