80's Star Sister Prototypes: Magazine Scans!

I just came across new, MEGA sized pictures of the Star Sisters in the .org galleries and learned something about the Star Sisters!

ALL the Star Sisters had translucent body parts with glitter in them!

Jewelstar = entire body (except for her face)
Starla = dark orange, translucent/glitter legs
Tallstar = magenta translucent/glitter lower arms, hands and boots

Since they are stars, and sisters...this makes PERFECT sense!

The vac-metal prototype of Tallstar (different from the English magazine) has a DIFFERENT chest plate with a jewel in it! It's kind of hard to tell...but it might be the Castaspella/Entrapta chest with a star sticker on it!

Thank you to whomever scanned and posted these! I never would have known about these details with the current, smaller pictures floating around the internet. I love you mysterious stranger!

I knew about the translucency on Jewestar and Tallstar, but I never noticed it on Starla...and I have this catalog. (Then again, she was always my 3rd favorite. )

*sigh* The Star Sisters were so ahead of their time. So gorgeous in their vintage toy forms.

I just think it's so cool the sisters have so much in common! Before I didn't really see how they "looked" enough like each other, but all of them having translucent/glittery body parts sells it for me.

Other things they have in common:

- Star wands
- Each has her own different coloured star
- All have tinsel streaks/highlights in their hair

About each sister, I always saw them like this:

Starla = the sun
Jewelstar = a star or comet
Tallstar = ?

I never quite understood what Tallstar represented in the cosmos. She kind of has a vintage astronaut vibe...but they're sisters so that can't be.

Hey, Tally...what do you think Tallstar is supposed to represent/be? She stretches. Maybe space itself? She can become vast!

I agree that the US magazine prototypes look nicer, and closer to finished versions...but...I'm not so certain. The only thing that confuses me, is if the US ones were the final versions, why do the instructions show the Italian ones?

Another thing I find odd is someone posted on here before seeing a Mattel rep with the new toys at a toy store when they were little (I think this may have been in Mexico). Anyway, they asked about the Star Sisters and what they did. She told him that Starla's backpack lit up (with lights) and showed him! This is the only time I ever heard of Starla's back pack lighting up instead of being glitter in water that got pumped around.

A: They are not Italian: most likely, one of the interantional retailer catalog was put together at a different stage of development
B: Those are not instructions. Those are cross sell art to be used in multiple places. Again, stuff like that is created even while the product is still in development, we have tons of examples of that in MOTU. Here at the Foundation we even have the Tyrantysaurus Rex cross sell art still ridden by He-Man instead of King Hiss!
C: trust the trained eye, the ones on the italian catalog are painted prototypes

You know how a lot of cartoons always show astronauts getting pulled into black holes? Maybe Tallstar represents black holes, which is why she's got the vintage astronaut look. Plus, I think there's some kind of collapsing effect when they're formed, which kinda-sorta ties into her ability.

Anyhow, I totally remember that post about someone having seen the Star Sisters in person. Pretty darn cool if that actually happened. Do you remember the one about someone's friend having a teacher/professor who showed the class a portfolio of her work on POP? Apparently the Star Sisters were in it.

Oh...maybe! She is a star that "collapses" upon herself (when she gets smaller). Black hole does make a bit of sense.

Well, since we keep seeing the toy versions are even MORE different than we thought, there still should be a possibility of getting them. Maybe it will allow Mattel some time to figure out how to make non-brittle translucent body parts.

I've got 50 create-a-wrestler slots on SmackDown! vs Raw 2011 to make an MOTU roster, essentially creating an MOTU fighting game. Here's some of the looks I've done so far.





















All the variant costumes are on the same character since this game allows up to four different costumes per character. Sorry Tallstar, I know you're a She-Raver tried and true, but I'm just as surprised as you I don't have any pictures of She-Ra here. I've got two and a half costumes finished for her though. So far it's original and Bubble Power. I got the cape finished for Starburst, but I need to sit down with my wife's laptop and get some good reference to complete that. Like I said, there's 50 character slots, why can't three of them be for the Star Sisters? I just hope I can find some other variants on their costumes because I'd hate to just make some of the guys with one costume or with just one color. Kinda feels like a waste to me and I'm always a yes man for variety. LOL

That's one of the reasons the Star Sisters aren't top priority for this game, but I'd like to make them. The biggest challenge I feel will be Jewelstar. Then again, I start thinking someone's going to be really tough and they end up being a breeze. Tallstar seems like the easiest one out of the three and watch her be the most challenging! I can already tell you the streamers on her legs won't make it. Starla is not likely to have the stars shooting out of her back and Jewelstar's chance at having the starburst wings lie in a pair of demon wings. At least these pictures gave me some insight into how I should handle some of their moves an such.

I'll probably have this thread pulled up on the laptop when I get around to making these three. Peace.

These designs are so nice. I love them. I think I will definitely have to repaint Tallstar once I get the set in January. Starla and Jewelstar are close enough, but Tallstar is really just totally different.

I just have no idea what paint to use, or how to make it look really well-done.

In any case, it's cool to see that Starla's legs were "crystal." I wish they were that way in the MOTUC set.

From what I understand, it originated as a consignment item at Hollywood Heroes, where a lot of the folks who worked on various toy lines go to unload this stuff. I believe the wings then filtered down to the guys who run the Toy Archive site and then into the hands of other collectors. (There may have been 2 or 3 of these in existence, though I'm not sure... It's possible these are the only ones) I know there's also someone on here that owns a Glory Bird prototype, though, from what I can recall, those wings weren't translucent/were painted. I probably have a picture of it somewhere.
